Harriet JAMES
Please Note: Harriet JAMES may have been Harriet JANES. Harriet married William HOCKING and two of the family bibles have their son as Edward Janes HOCKING and his gravestone also has Edward Janes HOCKING. A search on the "Family Search" website has both Harriet JAMES and Harriet JANES as the same person born on 3 August 1816 to the same parents.

Harriet was born 3 August 1816. Her parents were John JAMES (or John JANES) and Sarah FORDHAM. She was baptised 15th September 1816 at St. George the Martyr's, Southwark, Surrey, England. She emigrated on 'Cleveland' in 1839. The ship left Falmouth, Cornwall on 17th June 1839 for Plymouth. The ship departed Plymouth 8th August 1839 and arrived in South Australian waters on 19th December 1839. Reports were that some of the passengers left the ship at Holdfast Bay while some stayed on board, coming ashore at Port Adelaide on 26th Dec 1839. Also on 'Cleveland' were the HOCKING family from Cornwall. William HOCKING was listed on the ship list as 18 years old, a wheelwright. William HOCKING married Harriet JAMES on 2nd January 1843 at St. Johns Church, Adelaide. William had been living in Sturt Street at the time and worked as a parchment maker. Harriet had been living at Kensington and had worked as a servant.

Harriet died 1st November 1862 (41yrs) at Adelaide and is buried in the West Terrace Cemetery.
William died 26 April 1868 at Adelaide and is buried in the West Terrace Cemetery.
