Carl Wilhelm MATTNER (known as Wilhelm) was born 17th May 1837 at Lagow, Brandenburg, Prussia. He sailed from Hamburg, Germany on 'Peter Godeffroy' on 11th May 1857, bound for South Australia, arriving at Port Adelaide on 7 Sept 1857. He lived at Lobethal for a time working as a wheelwright. Carl married married Pauline Emily MARKS 4th Sept 1862 at Hahndorf, South Australia. Carl and Pauline had 12 children, 3 born at Harrogate, the rest born at Oakbank. Carl was Naturalized 15th March 1865 and took an Oath of Allegiance 19th September 1865.

Pauline Emily (called Emilie) MARKS was born 1st September 1842 at Bomst, Posen, Germany. Her parents were Carl Christian MARKS and Caroline Wilhelmine MARKS (nee. ROHRLACH). Emilie came to Australia with her parents in 1846 (4yrs) on 'Patel' which left Bremen on 27 Jun 1846. Emilie lived in Hahndorf and went to the Lutheran School there.

Carl met his future brother-in-law Carl August MARKS at Harrogate. He was a blacksmith and Carl MATTNER worked for him at Harrogate before the pair set up a business making vehicles at Oakbank. Carl MARKS did the steel work and Carl MATTNER did the timber work. It was reported that Carl had made the first wheels for the famous 'Ridley Stripper' and that he was one of the first on the Echunga goldfields. E.W. Mattner (b.1893) had said that as a boy, he remembers watching his grandfather (Carl Wilhelm) at Hahndorf, working on timber beams for the building of the Hahndorf Mill.

Carl Wilhelm MATTNER died 18th June 1920 (83yrs) at Eastwood
Emilie died 12 May 1930 (85yrs) at Balhannah
They are buried at Bonney's Flat cemetery, near Balhannah.
Their children Maria, Ida, Joe and Hugo are also buried at Bonneys Flat as is their grandson Edward William MATTNER and his wife Lorna (nee. PRINCE)
